Late Adapters explores the future of ageing in Finland

Statistics Finland reports over 231,295 immigrants currently live in Finland. Most are of working age. By 2040 many will be seniors. Their future experience is the central question of Lesley Rawstorne’s play Late Adapters.

The production examines the reality of being a lonely senior in a foreign country. It looks at how the twilight years might unfold for those who moved to Finland decades earlier.

Tomorrow’s elderly meet future tech

Late Adapters is a collaborative multi-media production. It provides a glimpse into the lives of elderly immigrants in 2040. The English-language play focuses on three septuagenarians living in Finland. It explores the positive and negative effects of technology on their lives.

Technology influenced the play’s creation. It includes video sections made with volunteers from around the world. These contributors sent hashtags and selfies to build a futuristic depiction of viral campaigns and online dating profiles.

The black comedy is based on research in the Social Services field. It is the result of writer Lesley Rawstorne’s thesis, Exploring the Current and Future Role of Technology in the Socialisation, Wellbeing and Inclusion of Elderly Immigrants in Finland, written with Ilkka Tuomi.

  1. Interesting to see a play based upon a thesis and a on a subject close to my heart. Shame I can’t make it. Is it being filmed? I’d love to watch a video of the performance.
