From Lahti to Lebanon: My journey to a Syrian refugee camp

 

While the Syrian war crisis is hardly fresh frontpage news, it continues to rage and gather more casualties with no real end in sight. This war has created a global humanitarian crisis, while refugees flee their homeland after being uprooted by selfish political desires and guerrilla fighting forces.

Wherever you live you most likely have seen this crisis manifest in extreme human persecution, death and desperation, and many people outside Syria feel powerless to help.

I currently reside in Lahti, Finland and this is where my story begins. Finland is a place like no other and the city of Lahti, even more so.

Hilarious! See what happens when the vigilantes Soldiers of Odin are joined by another bunch of clowns

Mark Twain once famously said, “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” The power of this weapon was beautifully demonstrated when the Soldiers of Odin (someone should tell them Odin was the foreign god of their colonial overlords) decided to skulk around the streets of Tampere. This group, which has taken to patrolling various Finnish towns to “protect” people from immigrants, few of whom would be stupid enough to hang out on the streets in minus 20 anyway, were met with a real threat on Saturday. Ridicule.

Police confirmed the presence of 30 - 40 protesters opposing the arrival of asylum seekers in Lahti. One of them wore the robes of the white supremacist movement the Ku Klux Klan.

In the late evening of September 24, the vile reactions to refugees in small towns around Finland took a quick turn for the absurd… at least in the eyes of those who know their history.

Finland’s public service broadcaster YLE reports that a bus transporting 49 mostly middle eastern asylum seekers were met by a group of 30-40 individuals protesting their arrival. The mob launched fireworks at the bus and later threw rocks at Red Cross workers operating the gates of the refugee center. As picked up by international media by now, one of these clowns wore an improvised Kuu Klux Klan outfit, of all things.
